PCTL COURSE DESCRIPTIONS


Introduction to Personal Computers - An introduction to basic computer technology, computer operating systems, and the application of various software programs and hardware components. Microsoft Windows and word processing will be explored on IBM compatible computers. A session on the Internet will be included. This course will enable the individual with beginning skills to work independently on a personal computer. No previous experience required.


Intermediate Personal Computing - This intermediate course is designed for those who have completed the Introduction to Personal Computers course or who already have a good understanding of the basics. Learn how to more fully utilize the capabilities of your computer, the operating system, and the most popular components of the Microsoft Office suite of software. More on file management and storage, computer maintenance, and protecting your system. Learn how to find the information you need on your computer and then what to do with it. Come prepared for an information packed, hands-on ten weeks!


MS Word - Word Processing - This course is especially designed for those who will use Microsoft Word as one of the primary programs on their computer. What are all those buttons and toolbars and what can they really do? We'll explore that and much more in this intensive hands-on class. Learn how to format documents, organize and name files effectively, get them ready for printing, make templates for re-use, and the keyboard shortcuts that can make it all much easier.


Microsoft Office - An in-depth course aimed at exploring the popular software programs in the Small Business Edition of Microsoft Office. Office 2000 Small Business provides a core set of tools to help manage and run a small business more effectively. It includes word processing, desktop publishing, and spreadsheet capabilities, as well as an e-mail and desktop information management tool. In addition, Office 2000 Small Business includes a set of analysis tools specifically designed to help small businesses make more timely and informed decisions. These tools include the Small Business Customer Manager, Business Planner, Direct Mail Manager, and Small Business Financial Manager.


Navigating the Net - An introduction to the Internet and all its parts. Included will be sessions on how to do effective searches, navigating and staying on track, downloading files and programs safely, and managing information. Also covered will be how to create and organize your bookmarks and favorite sites, set your Internet preferences, how to keep your system running smoothly on-line, and Internet e-mail. We will also explore message boards, chat rooms, and instant messenger programs. Both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator will be used and explored. This is always a lively and entertaining class.


Doing Business on the Web - A course exploring the current explosion of E-Commerce and doing business on the Internet. The problems and solutions of establishing an effective Internet presence, whether for an individual or small business, will be presented and discussed, with plenty of on-line examples of what to do and what to avoid. What to look for when choosing a web-site designer, methods of accepting payment on-line, e-mail methods and uses, auto-responders, etc. will all be discussed in depth, with an extensive list of resources made available to all participants.


HTML & the Basics of Building a Web-Site - This course is designed as an introduction to learning the basics of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and web-design. Whether you are interested in building personal or small business web pages or want to better understand the lingo and workings for hiring a web designer for your business, this course will demystify the terms and methods of creating and putting a web-site on-line. A hands-on understanding of HTML will be stressed. No previous knowledge of HTML is required.


HTML and Web-Design - Intermediate - Aimed at those that have completed our HTML & the Basics course or who already have an understanding of basic HTML and web-design. We'll learn about the more complicated aspects of HTML design and the overall concepts of cross-browser compatibility, metatags and keywords, utilizing tables effectively, designing effective navigation links, organizing your pages and files for larger sites, FTP, and submitting your site to search engines.


HTML and Web-Design - Advanced - An advanced course aimed at those who have completed our Intermediate HTML course or who have a solid understanding of some of the more involved aspects of HTML and web-design and want to go deeper. We'll take an in-depth look at understanding and using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and Javascript, effectively publicizing your web-site and tracking hits and page use, image slicing and optimizing your graphics, photos, and pages for quick loading, and creating consistent and appealing pages that keep people on your site and encourage them to return. A look at DHTML , the soon to be standard XML, and designing for wireless devices (WAP) will be included as well.


Paint Shop Pro - Learn why so many designers prefer the popular Paint Shop Pro over Adobe Photoshop for optimizing and manipulating photographs and creating logos and graphics. We'll take a thorough hands-on look at where all the tools are, what they are capable of, and how to use them to maximize your time and efforts. How to use selections, masks, layers, color tools and special effects will be covered as well, in easy to understand step by step lessons. Recommended for those with a bit of previous photo and/or paint program experience.


Quickbooks Pro - Learn the ins and outs and intricacies of this best-selling solutions software program used for managing personal and business finance. We'll explore Invoicing and Statements, Accounts Receivable/Payable, Payroll, Inventory and Purchase Orders, Vendor Lists, Job Costing, how to integrate Quickbooks with Word, Excel, and Outlook, and much more.


Certification Courses - Get Certified! PCTL will be offering courses packed with information to assist those seeking A+, Network+, I-Net+, and Server+ Certification. PCTL recognizes the trend of leaning towards non-vendor specific certifications such as those above, and aims to help create a more skilled IT workforce to fill the growing need. We'll cover what you need to know, where you can take the certification tests, and what it takes to pass them.
